Gov. Dave Heineman asks fourth- and fifth-grade students May 15 at St. Thomas More School in Omaha whether carrots or celery might be alternatives to their suggestion that popcorn be the official snack of Nebraska. The state doesn’t have a state snack right now, and students from last year’s fourth-grade social studies class wrote him letters asking that popcorn receive the designation. But Heineman says Illinois already has declared popcorn as its state snack. The students were not deterred – arguing Nebraska is the top grower of popcorn in the country.
