Chrism Mass celebrates priesthood and distribution of holy oils

Archbishop George J. Lucas joined with his brother priests, deacons and laity from across the archdiocese March 26 for the annual chrism Mass at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha.

During the Mass, the priests reaffirmed their priestly commitments and the archbishop blessed the oil of the sick and the oil of catechumens, and consecrated the oil of chrism.

After Mass the oils were distributed to parishes throughout the archdiocese for use in administering the sacraments and the anointing of altars and churches.

In most parishes, the oils are ceremoniously presented during Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper.
