Christ Child Society awards scholarships

The Christ Child Society of Omaha awarded scholarships to 12 young mothers at the organization’s annual Summer Soiree event May 30 in Omaha. Scholarships were awarded to women who are advancing their educations while caring for children.

This year’s recipients are students at College of Saint Mary, Metropolitan Community College and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. To qualify, recipients needed to be nominated by a sponsoring organization such as Mater Filius, Avenue Scholars, Heartland Family Service-Family Works, Youth for Christ or College of Saint Mary.

Now in its second year, the Christ Child Society scholarship program awards up to $5,000 per year to eligible candidates, and the scholarships are renewable if the recipient remains in good academic standing.

“Studies show single mother poverty rates decline with each additional level of education achieved,” said Christ Child Society board president Sue Seline. “We are happy to help these young women as they work toward creating a better future for themselves and their children.”

The Christ Child Society of Omaha is a nonprofit social service agency dedicated to providing bags of baby necessities (layettes) for young mothers as well as offering significant educational scholarships to improve the future of eligible families.
