Nebraska Supreme Court ruling called ‘a huge win’ for life

The Nebraska Supreme Court upheld a law that limits abortion and bans dangerous drugs and medical procedures for minors.

The court ruled Friday to uphold Legislative Bill 574, which protects babies in the womb beginning at 12 weeks of gestation and protects children from permanently sterilizing surgeries and limits access to “cross-sex hormones.”

The ruling was “a huge win for the respect and protection of human life in our state,” said Tom Venzor, executive director of the Nebraska Catholic Conference.

The 12-week protection is a step up from the state’s previous limit of abortion at 20 weeks.

“The Nebraska Supreme Court’s ruling is a significant step toward the full recognition and protection of human dignity, the integrity of the human body, and the innocence of childhood in Nebraska,” Venzor wrote to supporters.

Governor Jim Pillen said he was “grateful for the court’s thorough and well-reasoned opinion upholding these important protections for life and children in Nebraska.”

After the Nebraska Legislature passed LB 574, opponents, backed by the abortion industry, immediately filed suit.

While the Supreme Court ruling is significant, the protections from abortion – and all of the pro-life laws over the last 50 years – are still at risk, Venzor said.

He urged voters to defeat the “Protect Our Rights” ballot initiative this November.

“If the abortion industry’s ballot initiative succeeds, it would erase our 12-week law, our parental notice and consent requirements for minors, and all the commonsense and widely supported health and safety regulations of the abortion industry that Nebraska has had in place for many years.

“If we each do our part, we can defeat this dangerous, deceptive and demeaning proposal,” Venzor said.

He urged everyone to pray and advocate for life. More information is available at Defeat the Pro-Abortion Ballot Proposal : Resources : Nebraska Catholic Conference.
