Poor Clare community mourns the loss of two leaders

Sister Mary Clare

Sister Theresina

A small community of Poor Clare Nuns, located in Elkhorn, is mourning the deaths of two sisters: its abbess, Sister Theresina of Jesus Santiago, and former abbess, Sister Mary Clare of the Holy Spirit Brown.

Sister Mary Clare, 93, died Nov. 6. Sister Theresina, 83, died Nov. 19.

Funeral arrangements for both are pending.

The Poor Clare Nuns are known for their enclosed life of prayer. Their Omaha-area community accepts hundreds of prayer requests annually.

The sisters’ history in the area goes back more than 140 years. The deaths of Sister Mary Clare and Sister Theresina leave just seven sisters at the Franciscan Monastery of St. Clare.

Sister Mary Clare has been described by her sisters as someone who loved to “sit under the sun, to bird watch and to read,” who responded to letters written to the Poor Clare Nuns and played the organ at the monastery.

Sister Theresina was always grateful to benefactors and friends of the sisters, including those whose generosity helped build their monastery in 2015, the Poor Clare Nuns said. She cherished personal meetings with three saints – John Paul II, Paul VI and Teresa of Kolkata – and loved flowers, trees and cooking for her sisters, her community said.
