Sister Genevieve served in Omaha archdiocese

Franciscan Sister Genevieve Pfeifer (formerly Sister Damian), who provided housekeeping at two parishes in the Omaha archdiocese, died Oct. 28 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was 103.

A funeral Mass was held Nov. 2 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, followed by burial at Mount St. Francis Cemetery, both in Colorado Springs.

Sister Genevieve was born and raised in Lindsay and attended the former St. Bernard Parish and St. Bernard School, both in St. Bernard, Nebraska.

She entered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in 1934 in Lafayette, Indiana, and professed final vows in 1941.

Sister Genevieve worked in domestic services at parishes and Franciscan communities in Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico and Colorado.

She also served at St. Bonaventure Parish in Columbus from 1942 to 1944 and St. Stanislaus Parish in Omaha from 1967 to 1968. She then returned to St. Bonaventure, serving until 1975.

Sister Genevieve was preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Catherine (Martischang) Pfiefer, five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by nephew, Msgr. Robert Nienaber, a retired priest of the archdiocese; niece, Franciscan Sister Jane Nienaber; other nieces, nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
