Sister Marietta Hanus taught in her home state and elsewhere

School Sister of St. Francis Marietta Hanus served as a teacher, administrator and pastoral care minister in her 77 years of religious life.

The Archdiocese of Omaha was one of the many places where she left an influence, teaching students at St. Patrick High School in Fremont from 1956 to 1959 and at the former Archbishop Ryan High School in Omaha from 1961 to 1965.

Sister Marietta – a native of Brainard, Nebraska – also served people in Wisconsin, Mississippi, Illinois, Honduras and Guatemala and held leadership roles in her religious congregation.

She is being remembered after her death Jan. 8 at Our Lady of the Angels Convent in Greenfield, Wisconsin. She was 95.

Her funeral was Jan. 28 at St. Joseph Chapel in Milwaukee.

Her nephew, Bishop Emeritus Jerome G. Hanus of Dubuque, Iowa, presided at a Jan. 31 memorial service at Presentation (Marietta) Parish in Bellwood, in the Diocese of Lincoln.

Burial was at St. Peter and St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Bellwood.

Sister Marietta entered the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1948 and made her first profession of vows in 1950 and her final vows in 1956.

Besides teaching, she served her congregation as assistant director of novices at St. Joseph Convent in Milwaukee and as vice president of the international religious order from 1966 to 1976 and again from 2004 to 2006.

From 2018 until her death, Sister Marietta ministered in prayer and presence at Our Lady of the Angels Convent in Greenfield.

Survivors include nieces, nephews, cousins; many friends; and the School Sisters of St. Francis.
