Safe routes, exercise among CUES’ goals

A group dedicated to reducing obesity among children is teaming up with three Catholic schools in Omaha to find safe walking and biking routes to school.

Through its Safe Routes to School program, Live Well Omaha Kids is working with students, parents and staff at All Saints, Holy Name and Sacred Heart schools (which are part of the Christian Urban Education Service, or CUES) as well as police, public works and city planning officials.

As part of that program, “walk audits” were held at each school last month to look at crosswalks, signage, sidewalk conditions and other factors, said Sheena Kennedy Helgenberger, director of Live Well Omaha Kids and grants manager for Live Well Omaha, which partnered with Children's Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha for the Safe Routes initiative.

An action plan to choose routes, increase safety and promote their use will be created in April with implementation by fall, she said.
