Second-graders exceed charitable goal

The goal was $300 for the Parkinson’s Foundation, in part to honor St. John Paul II’s battle with the disease.

But the 17 second-graders at St. Francis School in Humphrey nearly tripled that goal, raising more than $876 after getting sponsors to pledge money for each word they spelled correctly in a recent Spell-A-Thon.

The children’s hard work is a good sign of great accomplishments ahead, second-grade teacher Stacie Baumgart said.
