Seminarians to travel to Mexico City for mission serving the homeless

Twenty-two seminarians of the Archdiocese of Omaha will travel to Mexico City next week for a mission-centered retreat serving the homeless.

Joined by Archbishop George J. Lucas, the seminarians will depart Sunday for their mission with Hope of the Poor, a non-profit co-founded by two Nebraska residents, Craig Johring and Danny Leger.

In Mexico City, Hope of the Poor missionaries serve drug-addicted children, homeless families and those living at the Mexico City dump.

“We bring hope to the rejected, the lonely, and the unloved,” according to the organization’s website. “We feed the poor, rent homes to take families off the street and work with employers to find them jobs. But we don’t stop there. Mother Teresa often said the greatest poverty is being unloved. We want to inspire all generations to radically love and bring hope to the hopeless.”

While in Mexico City, the seminarians spend a considerable amount of time at the site where Mary appeared to Juan Diego in 1531. They will celebrate Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe several times during the trip and view Juan Diego’s tilma featuring the miraculously imprinted image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Father Scott Schilmoeller, Director of Vocations for the archdiocese, encourages prayers for the seminarians during this time of retreat and mission.
