Sister Pierre served 18 years at Omaha archdiocese schools

Benedictine Sister of Sacred Heart Monastery Pierre Roberts, a longtime educator who taught at schools in the Omaha archdiocese, died June 13 in Yankton, S.D. She was 93.

A funeral Mass was held June 17 at Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel at the monastery in Yankton, with interment in the monastery cemetery.

Sister Pierre served for 17 years at Cedar Catholic High School in Hartington, from its opening in 1963 to 1980, first as an English teacher, then as principal beginning in 1965. She also taught at then-St. Philomena School in Omaha from 1960 to 1961.

In the 1940s, 1950s, and briefly in the 1960s, Sister Pierre taught at Catholic schools in Aberdeen, Yankton, Webster and Sioux Falls, S.D.

A native of London in Ontario, Canada, Sister Pierre joined the Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in 1940, made her first vows in 1942 and her final profession in 1945.

She received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and a master’s degree in English from Creighton University in Omaha.

From 1980 to 1995, she served as registrar, vice president for academic affairs and academic adviser at Mount Marty College in Yankton. She returned to the monastery in 1995 and served as formation director until 2001.

In her later years, she served in the monastery gift shop and as receptionist.
