Special Masses to honor professional groups

Three special Masses this month and next will honor doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, emergency first responders including police and firefighters, and lawyers, judges and other legal professionals.

Each Mass is named for a color associated with those professions.

Archbishop George J. Lucas will celebrate the White Mass, honoring health care professionals, at 8 a.m. Sept. 24 as part of the Nebraska bishops’ pro-life conference, "Made in His Image: Human Dignity in the Secular World," at Creighton University’s Harper Center in Omaha.

Archbishop Lucas also will celebrate the Blue Mass, honoring police, firefighters and other first responders, at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 at St. Pius X Church in Omaha.

The Red Mass, honoring the legal profession and named for red robes worn long ago by judges and doctors of law, will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at St. John Church on Creighton’s campus. Jesuit Father Daniel Hendrickson, university president, will preside.

A reception will follow the Red Mass, in the Schneider Commons of the Ahmanson Law Center. To attend, call 402-280-2222 by Sept. 26.
