St. Matthew School students, teachers plant stakes for parish church

Students at St. Matthew the Evangelist School in Bellevue marked the opening days of school in a special way Aug. 18 – planting stakes for a parish church.

After the first all-school Mass, students and teachers planted stakes with their names to mark a foundation for St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish’s first church.

Founded 54 years ago as Cardinal Spellman School to serve a growing Offutt Air Force Base, St. Matthew School predates the parish by more than 30 years. Parish Masses have been held in the school’s multipurpose worship center and gym.

Planting stakes for the new church follows a similar ceremony done earlier this summer by members of the parish.
