Win-win-win: Students learn the faith while earning scholarship money and helping charities

Teams of high school students demonstrated their knowledge of the faith – competing for scholarship money and their favorite charities – at the Second Annual Catholic Quiz Bowl.

The competition was held Jan. 22 at St. Margaret Mary Parish in Omaha.

A new round of questions this year, on Catholic current events, tripped up many of the Quiz Bowl teams of three to five students, causing the lowest scores of any category.

A round on Sacraments drew the highest scores.

Other categories included questions on the New Testament, Old Testament, saints, and the Mass.

A team of Omaha-area homeschool students split the top prize of $5,000 in scholarship money. A team from V.J. and Angela Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha and Bennington High School won second place and a shared prize of $2,500 in scholarships. Third place, with a prize of $1,000 in scholarships, went to a team from Mount Michael Benedictine High School in Elkhorn.

The teams also won donations to charities they had chosen.

Donors funded the prizes for the event, organized by St. Margaret Mary Parish.
