ANNUAL BLUE MASS

Christ sends us out as His disciples to be people of dignity, respect, justice and peace. Archbishop George J. Lucas said police officers and firefighters exemplify that call and thanked God for the first responders at the annual Blue Mass.

Every year in October, first responders are honored at the Blue Mass, held this year at Mary Our Queen Church in Omaha. As part of the ceremony, the names of firefighters and police officers who died in the last year were read aloud, and a rose was placed in a bouquet in their memory. Mary Our Queen School students participated in the Mass, while a choir from Creighton Preparatory School in Omaha led the congregation in song.

After the Mass, Archbishop Lucas led the students and other worshipers outside the church to pray for the first responders. He then blessed some of their equipment and vehicles.
When the prayers were through, the archbishop, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, and police and fire officials lingered for high fives and selfies with the students.
