The Annual Blue Mass
First responders carry a message of God – a message of peace, competence and care – when they rush out to help people, Archbishop George J. Lucas said at the annual Blue Mass on Oct. 5, held this year at St. Patrick Church in Elkhorn. The Blue Mass is offered for police officers and firefighters every October. The first responders don't hesistate when they run out to help, to "bring the goodness of God" to wherever they are called, the archbishop said in his homily. He thanked firefighters and police officers in attendance for their service. St. Patrick School students brought blue and white roses to the altar in memory of those who had served in the fire or police departments and died in the past year. After the Mass, Archbishop Lucas gathered outside with the students, the first responders and others. He invited the students to pray an Our Father with him for all those who serve, and he blessed police and fire equipment.
