Youths help hurricane victims

A breakfast sponsored by a youth group celebrating fellowship among area towns also served as a Hurricane Harvey relief effort at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Tilden.

Parishioners Jerry and Mary Dittrich, with their son, Kalen, a senior at Elkhorn Valley High School in Tilden and member of the youth group, organized the Sept. 17 breakfast at the parish center that served pancakes, French toast and sausage to about 250 people from towns including Tilden, Neligh, Oakdale, Meadow Grove and Petersburg.

Ten elementary and high school youths also set up a collection box to help pay transportation costs for Norfolk-based Orphan Grain Train hurricane relief efforts in Texas. The students collected more than $2,500, including $750 in matching donations from area businesses.
