A look back at Archbishop Michael McGovern’s first weeks in northeast Nebraska

It has been more than a month since Archbishop Michael G. McGovern was installed as the sixth Archbishop of Omaha on May 7 at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha.
Since that day, the archbishop has been on the move across northeast Nebraska, celebrating Masses, meeting his flock and much more. Here are some highlights from his travels.

May 8, 2025
Archbishop McGovern visits with the media about the the historic election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope.

May 15, 2025
Archbishop McGovern celebrates a Mass of Thanksgiving for the election of Pope Leo XIV – a fellow Chicago native – at St. Patrick Church in Fremont, where he was joined by approximately 70 priests of the archdiocese.
May 16, 2025
Archbishop McGovern celebrates Mass at St. Bonaventure in Columbus.
May 17, 2025
The archbishop joins Creighton University President Father Daniel Hendrickson at the university’s commencement exercises on May 17, saluting graduates.
May 31, 2025
Archbishop McGovern celebrates Mass at Called by Name: A Heart of Jesus Revival at Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk. A week earlier, on May 25, he visited St. Augustine Indian Mission in Winnebago and met with members of the Holy Apostles Parish Family.
June 5, 2025
Archbishop McGovern concelebrated Mass with Archbishop Emeritus George J. Lucas, Archbishop Emeritus Elden Francis Curtiss and Benedictine Abbot Michael Liebl of Mount Michael Abbey in Elkhorn for the dedication and consecration of St. Patrick Parish’s new church.

The archbishop ordained the archdiocese’s newest priests, Fathers Logan Hepp, Brian Hula and Will Targy, at St. Cecilia Cathedral.

Archbishop McGovern plans to continue to visit parishes and other ministries in the weeks ahead. Later this month, his travels will take him farther afield. He will be in Rome on June 29 for the Mass for the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul. The Mass, presided over by the Holy Father, is where Archbishop McGovern will have his pallium blessed and conferred on him by Pope Leo XIV.
