Catholic school teachers gather for SpREAD the Word Professional Development Day
October 7, 2025
Nearly 950 Catholic school educators from across the Archdiocese of Omaha gathered at Marian High School in Omaha on Oct. 3 for a day of highly specialized training in the science of reading.
“By providing this day of professional development around the science of reading, we are ensuring that our teachers have knowledge of the current research to help them continue to meet the needs of our students,” said Vickie Kauffold, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Omaha.
The “SpREAD the Word” professional development day, organized by the archdiocese’s Catholic Schools Office, began with a prayer service led by Archbishop Michael G. McGovern.

Throughout the day, teachers learned with evidence-based strategies to raise student reading proficiency across the archdiocese’s 67 Catholic schools.
While Catholic schools in northeast Nebraska already meet or exceed Nebraska’s state reading benchmarks, the day aimed to help them achieve even greater success.
Our theme “SpREAD the Word” reminds us that teaching children to read gives them access to knowledge, confidence, imagination, and truth,” said Anita Harkins-Mehsling, Associate Superintendent of Leadership Development. “It’s about equipping them with the tools to read, to share their own words, and to transform the world with both.”
