People from faith communities across the archdiocese stood publicly and prayerfully for the right to life on Sunday, Oct. 5, as part of the annual Life Chain.

Holding signs and rosaries, they formed lines along local thoroughfares in Omaha, Blair, North Bend, West Point, Springfield, Lyons, Hartington, Beemer and Norfolk.

Sunday’s participants were part of a much larger movement, with Life Chains held in more than 1,500 communities in the United States and Canada. The event is traditionally held on the first Sunday of October.

In Omaha, the chain stretched along a portion of Dodge Street and West Dodge Road, from Memorial Park to 90th Street. Some motorists honked and waved in support. A handful of others jeered, but the event was otherwise peaceful.

Archbishop Michael G. McGovern stood among the Omaha Life Chain participants, offering his prayers and support in front of St. Margaret Mary Church, 6116 Dodge St.

After Life Chain, demonstrators gathered on the church grounds for food, drink and fellowship.
