Ethics conference to call medical professionals, students to highest standards
August 12, 2024
“A unique responsibility belongs to health care personnel … their profession calls for them to be guardians and servants of human life. Its deepest inspiration and strongest support lie in the intrinsic and undeniable ethical dimension of the health care profession which requires every doctor to commit himself to absolute respect for human life and its sacredness.” – St. John Paul II
A regional healthcare ethics conference at Creighton University in Omaha can help “healthcare professionals practice the highest ethical and medical standards of their profession,” according to organizers.
The Converging Roads Conference, which will take place on Oct. 19, is a daylong event sponsored by the St. John Paul II Foundation, Archdiocese of Omaha, Father Edward J. Flanagan Guild of the Catholic Medical Association and Creighton University.
The conference will feature talks by national-level authorities in medicine and ethics as well as local ones, notably Archbishop George J. Lucas and Deacon Stephen Doran, a neurosurgeon and faculty member at Nebraska Medical Center.
The day begins with 7:30 a.m. check-in and an 8 a.m. White Mass, followed by talks on “Human Dignity and the Mission of Catholic Health Care,” “The Vocation of the Health Care Professional,” “Care for the Caregiver,” “The Catholic Approach to Caring and Accompanying the Dying,” “Spiritual and Religious Considerations to the Mental Health Crisis: An Integrative Perspective” and “Medical and Surgical Interventions in Light of the Gift of Fertility.”
The day also includes a Hippocratic Oath Luncheon and a 5 p.m. Wine & Cheese Reception to conclude the conference.
Registration is now open.
Ticket prices vary and include options for online participation. Scholarships are available for students.
