Jesuit priest who received Medal of Freedom set to speak in Omaha

One of the most recent National Medal of Freedom recipients will be the featured speaker at the National Christ Child Society’s 2024 convention Sept. 19-21 in Omaha.

Jesuit Father Gregory Boyle, who received the nation’s highest civilian honor at the White House in May, will speak at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Embassy Suites in the Old Market.

Father Boyle has received multiple honors for his gang intervention and rehabilitation work, including the University of Notre Dame’s Laetare Medal given annually to a Catholic “whose genius has entailed the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.”

He is the founder of Homeboy and Homegirl Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation program in the world.

There is no charge for Father Boyle’s talk, sponsored by Physicians Mutual. Freewill donations will be accepted.

The national convention is expected to bring to Omaha more than 100 delegates from Christ Child Society chapters across the country.

The society was established in 1887 and is dedicated to serving children. The Christ Child Society of Omaha does that by raising money for college scholarships for parents in need, by providing infant car seats and by assembling and distributing diaper bags filled with handmade blankets and other baby essentials.
