Hope, faith and a family’s fight against pediatric cancer
April 24, 2025
Of the many lessons Jenny Peters learned from having two young children diagnosed with rare and often fatal types of cancer, one in particular stands out: the need for hope in all situations.
In Archbishop George J. Lucas’ last episode before retiring of his video podcast, Missional Catholics, he talks with Peters about her ability to remain hopeful in the darkest days she and her husband, Matt, faced as parents. Peters describes how her prayer life matured and sustained her through every parent’s worst nightmare – twice – all while discovering the innate goodness in people.
More than two decades later, the children that the Peters family wasn’t sure would survive are thriving. For their part, the couple and parents of nine children continue to pay forward the love, prayer and support that enveloped their family all those years ago through their work in their parish, Our Lady of Lourdes in Omaha, the archdiocese, the Heart Ministry Center and so many others.
In the podcast, Peters talks about a promise she made to herself always to work to provide hope to the hopeless and how that has become a way of life for her and her family. She also explains why hope is a gift we can all give.
