Priest to be honored for immigration work

A retired priest of the archdiocese, Father William Fitzgerald, will be recognized March 3 in Phoenix for his work with an Arizona-based effort to promote just, workable migration between the United States and Mexico.

The Kino Border Initiative has awarded Father Fitzgerald with its Spirit of Pope Francis Award for his long commitment to its mission, including direct assistance to the destitute and undocumented, and social and pastoral education on both sides of the border.

A native of Omaha who was ordained in 1958 and served in a number of parishes and as archdiocesan vocations director before retiring from active ministry in 1996, Father Fitzgerald now lives in Scottsdale, Ariz.
