St. Wenceslaus principal receives national award
January 15, 2025
William Huben, principal of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic School in Omaha, is being honored for his faithful service to Catholic education by the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA).
Huben and eight other educators from across the country received the Lead. Learn. Proclaim. (LLP) Award. This annual award recognizes outstanding efforts, contributions and achievements in support of Catholic school education.
“Mr. Huben has been a faithful, strong and steady leader at St. Wenceslaus School for the past 16 years. I’m very proud to have a school leader from the Archdiocese of Omaha be selected for this award,” said Vickie Kauffold, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Omaha.
Dr. Steven F. Cheeseman, NCEA President and CEO, said that “LLP awardees embody the mission of Catholic education through their faithful dedication to shaping hearts and minds in Christ’s image. Their work is a testament to the transformative power of Catholic education.”
Under Huben’s leadership, St. Wenceslaus was recognized in 2019 as a Blue Ribbon School. It is Nebraska’s largest parochial elementary school, with a state-of-the-art STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, math) lab.
Huben’s biography on the NCEA website states that “his focus on cutting-edge technology has equipped students for success in a faith-integrated environment.”
In selecting Huben for this award, the NCEA also noted that Huben “inspires students and faculty through his personal faith journey” and is committed to service and fostering compassion. St. Wenceslaus holds an annual food drive, which has provided nearly a million pounds of food to Catholic Charities and its St. Martin de Porres food pantry. Further, monthly dress-down days support Essential Pregnancy Services, Educate Uganda and other local and worldwide organizations.
Huben, who is set to retire at the end of the current school year, and his fellow recipients will be celebrated on April 21, on the eve of the NCEA 2025 convention in Orlando.
