Final Mass offered at CHI Medical Center

A Catholic-based hospital that closed June 9 after 147 years of service in Omaha held a final Mass two days later for more than 250 doctors, nurses, staff and others.

"We are marking with gratitude what has taken place," said Jesuit Father James Clifton, associate dean for mission, identity and diversity at the Creighton University School of Medicine. "Now God has brought us together in a new place to continue a sacred mission. This is cause for confidence, gratitude and joy."

The hospital, CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center at 601 N. 30th St., began as St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in 1870. It underwent many name, management and location changes before being sold at its current location to CHI Health (then Alegent Health) in 2012.

Now, the hospital’s mission has moved to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy at 7500 Mercy Road in Omaha. North Omaha residents continue to be served at 24th and Cuming streets through a facility run by CHI and Creighton University that includes an emergency department, primary and specialty care, and other health services.
