Knights of Columbus raise more than $4,000 for camp

Talk about the Nebraska football team is a big draw, even in the off-season.

Knights of Columbus Columban Council 6192 of Bellevue raised more than $4,000 for a summer camp that serves children whose parents have cancer by holding a March 4 Big Red Night dinner of hamburgers and bratwurst.

The event featured Sean Callahan, publisher of HuskerOnline.com and a reporter for KETV Channel 7 and 1110 KFAB radio, both in Omaha.

"It’s a chance for them to be with other kids in the same situation," organizer Larry Reed said of the camp. "They know they are not alone, and they get to be kids for a week."

Camp Kessem, located near Fremont, is run by a student organization at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The weeklong camps, which are free for the children, also provide them with support and an opportunity to share, Reed said.
