Twice a winner in spelling bee

Fifth-grader Hannah Fernandes of St. Stephen the Martyr School in Omaha has taken the top prize twice in a row.

Last year’s winner of the Metropolitan Catholic Schools Spelling Bee did it again Feb. 10, winning the multi-school competition at St. Mary School in Bellevue.

Erin Buglewicz of Our Lady of Lourdes School in Omaha won second and Lexus Tenorio of St. James/Seton School in Omaha was third.

Fernandez advances to the March 19 Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha, which she also won last year and advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., losing there in the oral rounds.

Sponsored by the Omaha World-Herald, the March 19 competition will include nearly 80 students from Nebraska and western Iowa. The winner will receive a free trip to Washington for the national competition at the end of May.
